The Ants, the Powder, and the Question of Coexistence

Today I discovered that a white powder that had been spread around the house and garden was not, as I had hoped, a deterrent to ants. It was an insecticide.
As I stood holding the container, I felt a wave of sadness. Not because I am particularly attached to ants, but because it reminded me how differently we can view the world around us.
For many people, ants are a nuisance. They enter homes, appear on kitchen surfaces, and seem to arrive in endless numbers. The natural response is often to find the quickest and most effective way to get rid of them.
Yet I found myself asking a different question.
Why are they here?
What are they looking for?
What role do they play in the wider ecosystem?
For over twenty years I have been exploring ways of living that are more aligned with nature. Through Ayurveda, yoga, herbalism, permaculture, and holistic health, I have come to appreciate that every living thing has a place and a purpose.
Ants aerate soil, recycle organic matter, disperse seeds, and form part of the intricate web of life that supports healthy ecosystems.
This experience also reminded me of something I have often struggled with: sharing spaces with people whose approach to health and wellbeing differs from my own.
Many of us have been conditioned to believe that cleanliness means sterilisation. We spray, disinfect, poison, and perfume our environments in the hope of creating safety. Yet in doing so, we can sometimes disconnect ourselves from the very systems that sustain life.
I am not judging those who choose a different path. Most people act from a place of care and good intention. The carer who used the powder was likely trying to solve a problem in the best way they knew how.
But for me, true wellbeing is not simply the absence of pests or germs.
It is the presence of balance.
It is fresh air flowing through open windows.
It is herbs growing in the garden.
It is understanding that not every challenge requires a chemical solution.
It is recognising that we are part of nature, not separate from it.
Perhaps the ants have gone. Perhaps they have simply moved elsewhere. Either way, this small encounter has become a gentle reminder of the world I wish to help create—a world where we pause before we react, where we seek understanding before elimination, and where we remember that coexistence is often more powerful than control.
At In the Moment X, this is the invitation we continue to explore:
To slow down.
To observe.
To reconnect.
And to remember that every choice we make ripples through the living world around us.
Sometimes even the smallest creatures have something important to teach us.
