Introduction to Tamera Peace Research Centre
Yesterday, I had the incredible opportunity to visit Tamera Healing Biotope, also known as Tamera Peace Research Centre, in Portugal. Guided by the lovely Juliette, I embarked on a tour that showcased the centre's innovative approaches to sustainability and community living. This 150-hectare project is home to over 120 people who are dedicated to learning and living together in harmony with nature.
Innovative Off-Grid Living
One of the highlights of my visit was witnessing how Tamera exemplifies off-grid living. The centre is a model of practical implementation, featuring huge solar ovens, Community spaces, yurts, campervans, and containers designed for sustainable living. It’s fascinating to see how this community has developed over the last 40 years into a thriving ecosystem that meets all their needs.
Water Retention and Natural Lakes
The experimentation processes at Tamera are truly inspiring, particularly their water retention strategies and the creation of hand made lakes. These efforts have transformed the land into a lush paradise filled with green trees, permaculture gardens, and herb gardens used for homeopathy. As I walked around, I was constantly enticed by fruit trees bearing delicious, chemical-free fruits, grown just as nature intended.
The Essence of Living in Nature
The sense of living in nature at Tamera is astounding. The expansive views and the rich biodiversity create an environment that fosters a deep connection with the earth. This experience has fuelled my passion for integrating some of these practices into my own work in permaculture, off-grid living, Ayurveda, yoga, and herbalism.
Building with Ancient Techniques: Compost Toilet Blocks
One of the most impressive aspects of Tamera is their use of ancient techniques to build compost toilet blocks. These eco-friendly sanitation solutions are not only practical but also sustainable. By utilising traditional methods, Tamera has created compost toilets that efficiently turn waste into valuable compost, which is then used to enrich the soil in their gardens. This closed-loop system is a perfect example of how ancient wisdom can be applied to modern sustainability challenges.
Collaborating for a Sustainable Future
I am excited to bring the insights and practices I learned at Tamera into my upcoming permaculture courses and trainings. By incorporating these innovative techniques, we can create sustainable and self-sufficient communities that thrive in harmony with nature.
